Vysehrad - Rotunda of St. Martin


 

VYSEHRAD
One of the most memorable quarters in Prague. There are many old legends about this place. According to one of them, the Vysehrad was the first seat of the Bohemian princes. Another one says about princess Libuse who predicted the glory of the future Prague... The first settlements were mostly built in wood. Prince Vladislav II (the king from 1085) transferred his seat from Prague Castle to Vysehrad.
See the interesting sights as Rotunda of St. Martin (11th cent.), Church of St. Peter and Paul, Vysehrad and Slavin cemeteries - the national cemeteries where many outstanding Czech characters were buried.


Petrin Hill


BREVNOV MONASTERY
It is the oldest male monastery in Bohemia. Founded in 993 AD, the first Benedictine monks were brought here from Rome by St. Adelbert. The Benedictine Abby of St. Margaret in Brevnov, the Church of
St. Margaret
built in Roman Baroque, and Vojteska summer pavilion, are the most significant sights there.

CONVENT OF ST. AGNES
One of the oldest architectonic monuments of the Early Gothic period in the Czech Republic. Founded in about 1234 by King Wenceslaus I on the wish of his sister St. Agnes. She entered the Order of the Clare Sun and became the first abbess of the convent. At present, the premises houses an exhibition of Gothic Art.



PETRIN HILL
Very pleasant resting place near the city centre and traditional rendezvous place for lovers. On the top of the hill, there is a 60m high iron Petrin Lookout Tower (1891) built after the model of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

CHARLES SQUARE
There are several significant monuments at the square: New Town Hall (14th cent.), Church of St. Ignatius (1665-70), Faust's House -
a Renaissance building from 16th century, The Czech University of Technology, built in New Renaissance style (1867), the Church of
St. Cyril and St. Method
, etc.
